The City of Watertown is proud to announce that it has been officially recognized as a Bird City by the Bird City Wisconsin program, administered by the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory.

This designation highlights Watertown’s commitment to bird conservation, habitat enhancement, and environmental education. Bird City communities across Wisconsin are leading efforts to create healthier environments for both birds and residents through proactive measures in habitat creation, threat reduction, public education, and sustainability.

“Receiving Bird City Wisconsin status is a tremendous honor that reflects the hard work of our city staff, residents, and community partners who continue to prioritize green spaces and wildlife-friendly practices,” said Andrea Draeger, Enrichment Programmer for City of Watertown Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. “Birds are indicators of environmental health, and by supporting them, we’re improving quality of life for everyone who lives, works, and visits Watertown.”

To earn Bird City recognition, communities must demonstrate meaningful actions across four

  • Habitat – Creating and maintaining bird-friendly green spaces

  • Threat Reduction – Minimizing dangers such as window collisions, cats, and pesticides

  • Education & Engagement – Teaching residents about birds and conservation

  • Sustainability – Promoting long-term environmental stewardship

A highlight of Watertown’s commitment to this mission was 2026 World Migratory Bird Day Celebration held on Saturday, May 30 at Riverside Park. The free, family-friendly event offered guided bird walks led by local naturalists, bird journaling stations, interactive learning displays, and creative crafts for children. Attendees of all ages enjoyed learning about migratory birds while contributing valuable observations to conservation science. Volunteers from Horicon Marsh and local bird enthusiasts helped make the event both educational and engaging.

The City encourages residents to get involved by participating in local birding events, creating backyard habitats, and supporting sustainable community initiatives. Additional information about Bird City Wisconsin can be found at lmbo.org/birdcity.
