The Watertown Fire Department announces the retirement of Deputy Chief Dave Johnsen, effective February 3, 2026, marking more than three decades of service in the fire service across Illinois and Wisconsin.
Deputy Chief Johnsen’s career began in Wisconsin with the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department in 1986, before he entered the career fire service with the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District in August 1991. Over the years, he advanced through the ranks from Firefighter to Lieutenant, Captain, and Battalion Chief. He later continued his service in Wisconsin as Fire Chief in Sussex and as Deputy Chief in Pewaukee, bringing a steady operational presence and servant leadership style wherever he served.
Johnsen’s education and professional development reflect the values that guide the Watertown Fire Department. His background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Management and a Master of Business Administration from Benedictine University, completion of the Executive Fire Officer program through the National Fire Academy, and designation as a Certified Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He is also a Certified Professional Coach through iPEC. Together, these experiences shaped him as a leader who approaches the fire service with compassion for people and dedication to the profession, qualities that align closely with our mission and the culture we continue to build.
Deputy Chief Johnsen joined the Watertown Fire Department in June 2024. During his time in Watertown, he helped the department build on the strong foundation already in place while moving key initiatives forward in a thoughtful, service-first way. His work supported several operational improvements tied to how our crews communicate, document, and respond, including technology upgrades, records management transition support, and ongoing coordination efforts with our regional partners. He also contributed to department-wide efforts that strengthen prevention work, apparatus planning, and long-range operational readiness.
“Dave has been a steady, trusted leader for our team and a true professional in how he approaches the job,” said Fire Chief Tanya Reynen. “He’s the kind of deputy chief who makes everyone around him better, through his coaching, his humor, and his ability to keep the focus on what matters when things get tough. We’re grateful for what he’s done for Watertown, and we’re excited for him to step into a well-earned retirement.”
The Watertown Fire Department will recognize Deputy Chief Johnsen during a swearing-in and recognition ceremony on January 29, 2026 at 4:30. The event will also include the formal recognition of three full-time members who are being sworn in off probation.
In addition, the department will be swearing in Watertown’s new Fire Marshal. We look forward to introducing him in a more formal way soon.
